TERTIARY MENTORING PROGRAM

The Leadership Mentoring Program for tertiary students is designed for tertiary students interested in observing leadership in action in the field of their choice. The partners with Leadership Plus in this program are: Willing and Able Mentoring Program (WAM), and the Leadership Victoria 'Skills Bank'. It is a pre-requisite for our Mentoring Program that the mentees have successfully completed the WAM Program.

The mentees select an industry that they believe is relevant to their career, and Leadership Plus finds a mentor/leader with the assistance of Leadership Victoria 'Skills Bank'. Leadership Plus has developed a Mentoring Manual with eight mentoring sessions for use by the mentor and mentee. These are to be used as a guide and are not a prescribed process.

Context:

The Willing and Able Mentoring Program (WAM) was developed by Kevin Murfitt, Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences, Deakin University. WAM's purpose is to match a student with a disability, in their final year of tertiary study, with a mentor in a company or organisation in the area in which the student hopes to establish their career. The student will gain a range of skills and information to assist them in their job search for a position in their intended profession or industry.

Leadership Plus proposes to offer a Leadership Mentoring Program designed for students with a disability who have successfully participated in the Willing and Able Mentoring Program and possess high leadership potential. Leadership Plus is committed to increasing the number of people with disabilities in leadership roles across a range of industries and organisations.

Proposal:

•  Students or graduates with a disability who have successfully participated in the WAM program will be given the opportunity to extend their professional development by undertaking a further mentoring relationship with a leadership focus. Leadership Plus will conduct the program.

•  WAM will provide past participants with ‘Expression of Interest' forms advertising the program that will be forwarded to Leadership Plus. (this method should ensure privacy)

•  Leadership Plus will develop a leadership specific manual/kit for mentor and mentees.

•  The structure of the program will be similar to WAM in duration and time commitment of participants.

•  Leadership Plus will recruit appropriate high level leaders from a range of industries as mentors to match the needs of mentees.

•  Mentees will be offered a ‘refresher' induction program held simultaneously with the WAM induction. Leadership Plus will conduct the program for Leadership mentees.

•  Debriefing and graduation will occur simultaneously with WAM function. This will make quite a ‘gala' occasion and allow networking across both groups.

•  All program costs associated with the Leadership program will be met by Leadership Plus. (economies of scale should be advantageous to both groups)

The aims of the Leadership Plus Mentoring Program:

•  support the development of students with disabilities in achieving leadership positions

•  enhance the knowledge, skills and development planning of participants

•  provide an extended opportunity for participants to experience first hand the day-to-day implications of leadership

•  enhance the capacity of selected leaders to act a mentors and further their own professional development.
