Here's an update on our Mentoring Initiatives:
This program connects a student (who has already completed the Willing and Able Mentoring Program) with a leader in the industry of their choice, has 10 pairs this year. The leaders are currently being sourced by Leadership Victoria for the mentees.
This program is underway and we have matched 11 mentees from the disability
advocacy sector with leaders from a mainstream advocacy organisation. The
organisations participating in this program are:
This program has been designed to pilot the idea of 3 to 5 people with disabilities being mentored by local government leaders. The Councils taking part in the pilot are:
• Latrobe City
• Bass Coast Shire
• East Gippsland Shire
• Baw Baw Shire
• South Gippsland Shire
• City of Dandinog
• Wellington Shire
• City of Moreland
• City of Yarra
Once again we'll be running our Leadership Internships. We're looking at from between 3 to 5 pairs this year.
These are usually about 10 days all up and are a significantly more intense experience than a mentoring match. We will be having at least one Senior Victorian Politician, Public Servant, Business person and Community Leader.
To promote an open dialogue amongst key stakeholders in the disability and leadership sectors we are running a series of Roundtable discussions. The 2 nd in the series took place in the Boardroom of Minter Ellison Lawyers at the Rialto Building. The theme for the forum was “LEADERSHIP IN THE DISABILITY RIGHTS MOVEMENT AND THE DISABILITY SERVICES SECTOR. WHAT ROLE SHOULD PEOPLE WITH OR WITHOUT A DISABILITY PLAY IN THAT LEADERSHIP? HOW CAN PHILANTHROPIC FUNDING POLICIES SUPPORT THIS?”
We heard from the following speakers:
Fiona Smith, the Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission and the Business Licensing Authority of Victoria provided a summary and reflection on the session. It was stimulating and saw 70 people engaging vigorously with each other. Outcomes of the session will be posted on the website. The next Roundtable topic is : What strategies could we use to promote people with disabilities as leaders? (Disability Action Plan)……Citizenship vs Consumerism.
It will be held on Tuesday 8 th November 2005.
