THE LEADERSHIP IN ADVOCACY MENTORING INITIATIVE.

As you are aware Leadership Plus is a community organisation that promotes people with disabilities as leaders. We have developed a new mentoring initiative for members of Committees of Management/Boards and Staff of disability advocacy organisations.

We are inviting you to nominate members of your Committee/Board and/or your staff to undertake a Mentoring Program. They will have a disability. They will have the opportunity to be mentored in Leadership in Advocacy by a Leader in a sector outside of the disability advocacy sector.

The Leadership in Advocacy Mentoring initiative will offer the successful 10 to 15 candidates the opportunity to experience leadership in organizations that may include;

• Amnesty International
• The Brotherhood of St Lawrence
• The Red Cross
• Australian Conservation Foundation
• The ACTU
• The Department of Justice
• The Office of the Public Advocate
• The Federation of Community Legal Centres

The Mentoring Program is based on our mentoring manual and takes the mentor and mentee through an eight step process. It begins with an induction and the signing of a contract at the first meeting that outlines the learning goals of the parties.

The Process

Upon receiving the nomination candidates will be short listed and interviewed. The successful candidates will then select the organisation that they are interested in having their mentor come from. We will organise an induction for mentees and after the signing of the learning goals contract, the mentoring will occur. We anticipate that this could take a total of 8 weeks beginning in August 2005. After its successful completion the mentees and mentors will be presented with a certificate at a ceremony.

Costs

We in tend that the participants incur no costs. Participants are expected to find their own way to their mentor's place of work. If there are costs arising from the participation of the mentee the nominating organization is expected to cover them.
